    Upsell

Persuading an existing customer to upgrade to a higher-priced plan or add more of what they already use.

An upsell is a revenue expansion motion within the same product line — moving a customer from Starter to Growth, from 5 seats to 20, or from 100GB to 1TB of storage. It is distinct from cross-sell, which introduces a different product. Upsells are the most natural expansion path because customers are already convinced of the product's core value; the conversation focuses on how much more value they can unlock at a higher tier. Effective upsell triggers are usage-based (customer approaching a limit), time-based (renewal approaching), or milestone-based (customer achieving a success outcome that makes the higher tier logical). The best upsells feel like a recommendation from a trusted advisor rather than a sales pitch, which is why customer success teams often own them.
