Uptime SLA
A specific SLA guarantee defining what percentage of time a service will be operational, measured monthly or annually.
Uptime SLAs translate into allowed downtime: 99.9% uptime permits about 8.7 hours of downtime per year; 99.99% permits about 52 minutes. The jump from three nines to four nines is not merely cosmetic — it demands fundamentally different infrastructure design, including redundant systems, automatic failover, and global distribution. SaaS vendors offer different uptime tiers by pricing plan: basic plans may have no formal uptime guarantee while enterprise plans carry 99.9% or 99.99% commitments backed by service credits. Tracking actual uptime requires real monitoring, not just checking a status page. Many vendors publish public status pages and uptime history to build trust and demonstrate commitment beyond the contract.
